What Is A G80 Locker

Eaton G80 locker?

Just bought a 2017 Chevy 1500 Z71 and was asking to have the G80 locker installed. The mechanic said it had it and then he said something about limited slip? I wasn't convinced needless to say. The window sticker didn't say exactly. How can I check? I backed into a snow bank with traction control off and both tires spun and dug down into the bank?

Check the RPO codes. If you have the G80 locker, it should be listed.

From what I can tell on the website, if you got the Z71, the G80 locking diff is standard. It's not limited slip per se. The G80 is a mechanically activated automatically locking differential. When the wheel speed of one rear wheel exceeds a certain ratio (compared to the other), it will automatically engage. However, when you exceed a vehicle speed of about 25 mph, it will automatically disengage.

To clarify the function of the safety;

If it is disengaged when you accelerate to and above 25 mph, the safety will prevent engagement.

If it has been engaged prior to reaching 25 mph, it will remain engaged until you let off on the throttle.

I'm pretty sure that you are correct on all Z71s having a G80. I've had one in all the GM trucks I've owned. There is a RPO code for it in the glove box though.

On the subject of G80s. They are shit. I've had two grenade on me in mostly stock trucks. GM guys running any HP above stock or offroading will switch them for something like a Detroit TruTrac. This is definitely one of my next mods.

3.73 gears, also with the gu6 code, correct? What truck is that from? I think s10s and Silverados used the same rpos...

Open glove box, look at RPO code sticker, find G80 code, you have G80

The G80 code is used in all GM vehicles so in cars it's the LSD and in trucks and SUVs it's the locking diff.

Calling it a limited slip isn't that unusual. The g80 code indicates an LSD in Camaros, and calling it a locker in the trucks is somewhat debated since it uses a clutch to engage.

· 5 yr. ago 93 3-link SAS Toy pickup, V8, dual cases, locked wontons, 40s

Jack up one rear wheel. Put the axle on a jack stand.

If you can then drive off it without using 4wd then you have the locker.

No idea why you're getting down voted so heavily. This was really interesting (and you backed it up with a video). Thank you!

This is a terrible idea. Please don't do this, OP.

Thank you for this. Never thought of it like this. I have a 15 z71 silverado with a busted g80. Dealer keeps telling me is posi, working as designed while it's definitely a g80 and not posi/lsd. Now, i dislike people telling me my own job so im biting my lip and want to have all my ducks in a row before i bring it back. (Service advisor- she's a pin head / washed up car whore who knows shit about cars. Talks to people like an expert, and like their idiots). Step Two.... let the dealer replace it on my own dime, and then fight it out with AMEX when i show them how it's supposed to work.
