So, what are the differences? Im thinking slick tyres, bigger brakes? How hard is it to turn an EXC into an SMR?

Generally it's all down to gayness, converted EXC's are often ridden by the gays and the SMR is a striaght man's bike, anyway thta's my silly angle on it. KevinYorks will be along soon to furnish us with the full facts I am sure . . .

Yohoo boys, here's my exc.....
Not that difficult to turn an EXC into a SMR. I do believe the SMR has slighlty different inturnals.
So to make an EXC to look like a SMR is simple enough

Looks nice that. Im thinking of getting something for racing/track days, how much difference do the internals make? Another thought is whats the SX differences? Its just SMR's are rare as fook!

I haven't had any sexual contact for 11 months, other than with pam and her five sisters, I've got some plans for wheels on my SMR . . .

Here's a bit I know of to start you off. Gearboxes - EXC is 6 speed wide ratio (best for road use), SX is 4 speed close ratio, SMR is 6 speed close ratio (best for racing). Engines - EXC long stroke/smaller piston (more docile, best for road use), SX/SMR short/stroke bigger piston (more lively, punchier power delivery, best for racing). I think EXC's run FCR39 carb and SX/SMR have FCR41 - not sure about that though. EXC/SX suspension would need to be sorted for racing, obviously wheels/front brake aswell. After that it's all about how deep your pockets are and how far you want to go with it (and what you want to use it for). There are plenty more small differences to consider (yokes, exhaust, CDI??, shorter swingarm??, frame bracing??) but I think they're the main ones.
EDIT: The above relates to RFS models - don't know much about twin cams (08 on)...

All the the bove is correct, apart from the Swingarm and Frame. RFS's came with the same swingarm and frame specs (year dependant), only from 2008 onwards were there differences in the frame and swingarm between the SX and SMR.
You can convert an EXC to look like an SMR, but the engine will never be the same on track.

Plenty of differences as listed below:
Frame
Swingarm
Forks
Triple Clamps
Rear shock
Front brake disc, caliper, master cylinder
Wheels
Tank
Front fender
catch tank
etc,etc
Thats before you consider the motor is totally different, EXC is an old school single cam SMR is DOHC so you have to really compare it with an SXF and that means the following changes to the motor
gearbox
final drive ratio
exhaust system
air filter
cam timing
clutch
There are plenty more detail changes between a SXF and an SMR and even more than an EXC

Last year of the rfs , 2007 450SMR & 560SMR had a braced frame , by the front engine mount .

Following on with this theme...................
I have put a deposit on a totally stock standard second hand 450smr and am wondering how much I will have to part with to get it in track day fettle??
Or is that a stupid question since it is essentially a race bike? aside from crash bungs etc does it need performance mods since most I see are draped in goodies?
p.s. your all f'kin responsible too...I never needed a 450smr in my life until i started on this forum! But I do look at less porn now so thanks for that.

Put a decent SINGLE pipe on (HGS, Akro) get it jetted and leave well alone. Spend your money on new tyres and track time...........that really will make a difference. If you are running at the sharp end of the BSMC Elite then you will need a little more, (quickshifter, Beringer, light engine tune etc)
The stock clutch is probably the weakest link in the SMR package to a Sutor is a wise investment if you are chasing championships.

I must admit a Smr twin cam is quicker off the mark even with a 570 kit fitted on mine
