Hi!
Planning on buying a GTI, and I was wondering what is the difference between these years? I know the 2012 has different rims and the 2013 offers different packages, but are there any mechanical changes/tweaks? :screwy:

Nope, the worst. Revised the intake mani and the diverter valve as well as changing the noisepipe the the synthetic Sounaktor (they both suck but the Soundaktor was an improvement IMO). Plus with otpions being a la carte, you had the opportunity to get some (IMO) very ugly 17" wheels.
***Packaging from 2011-2013 has been the same***
2010
-options were a la carte so it was tough to get what you wanted and the car was a bit too pricey. One advantage was that you could get the RNS510 in 2010--though the RNS315 is noticeably more responsive.
-NO 9W7 BT (this was retarded :screwy
2011
-slight change to the gauge cluster if I remember correctly.
-Options are now 'packaged' (view www.vw.com for details)
-Detroits are STANDARD
-9w7 BT
-KESSY
-ummmm, there might be a bit more
2012
-LED DRLs
-slightly improved BT
-tweaks/improvements to BT audio (control of track changing through touchscreen and showing what's playing on the screen vs. not in '11)
-Autobahn trim receives brushed interior pieces including the pushbutton and the new Serron wheels
-may be a few more but I think that about wraps it up
2013
-I think the only change is wheels. Detroits on the base and the Serrons stay with the Autobahn but the mid-trims get the 30th wheels
I hope this helps. Vortexers feel free to add

MFSW was standard until 2011 or 2012 when the base was introduced with no touchscreen. The issue was that in 2010 you had the MFSW, with a phone button on it, but w/out 9W7 which was in other models with the MFSW at the time. So you had someone look at a Jetta with 9W7, think they were getting the same features when the went for a Golf, GTI or Sportwagen which for some stupid reason still had 9W2

You could get what you wanted online but believe me (as I sold VW's from the time MK5 ended until just now) it was MUCH more difficult to get what you wanted when it came to buying the car. Plus the car was too expensive. The only real advantage was the RNS510, which IMO is debatable because of how laggy it is. It has gotten better/faster recently but the RNS315 is still easier to use when you wanna just go.

Didn't the 2010s still have the noise pipe while the 2011+ have the Soundakter?

And still no Auto-headlights...Not even on the Golf R!--though the '08 (and '04 if I'm not mistaken had it!)

Yes, this was mentioned in my spiel.

Different than my experience. I walked in to my dealer, said I wanted a CW, 2DR manual with xenons, jacky cloth and no sunroof. Done deal, got it for under 24k

Glad you got what you wanted but it was infact a lot more difficult to get the options you wanted and the right color. Packaging made the car cheaper and easier to get exactly what you wanted or much closer (that's why the change was made). Plus anything in CW makes it easier as most people love CW.

I don't believe any of the previous GTI's have had auto headlights. My R32 has them though. Not sure if the mkIV R32's had them as well.

Oh, poor baby. You have to reach over and turn them on and off manually.

I think the 2010 was nice because you could possibly get xenons and dynaudio at a decent price. Now you have to get the autobahn package with leather, kessy, nav...all things I don't want to pay for.
Also, anyone know if it is really true that in the 2013 GTI you can actually turn off ESP? That would be a deal maker for me! But, I'll believe it when I see it! Yeah I might only turn this off occasionally but it's the principal, man!! to electronic nannies!!

Volkswagen of America has released the first official information on 2013 Model Year changes. Every model except the Routan is receiving new updates, some of them significant. The big story for 2013 will be the addition of the Beetle Convertible and the Jetta Hybrid. We had a chance to drive a pre-production model of the Jetta Hybrid and VW has managed to keep the German performance you'd expect while building a hybrid system that behaves almost completely like a regular car.
On the smaller changes there are a few which are noteworthy. The GLI gets HID's as an option and launch control on DSG models. The ability to turn off the ESP has also been added back into the GTI and GLI models. "

I completely agree with that, I would have preferred to have dynaudio as well for maybe a tad more with or without nav but for the most part, this only worked in theory (vw.com). For a lot of people, it was a bit of a different story when it came to actually buying the car.

I had an 11 and now a 12, so here is what I found. Mind you I have a Canadian Spec GTI. Some have already been mentioned so I won't go there again.
1) 2012 has door sill plates on the front (4 door) 2011 didn't
2) GTI logo on steering on black inlay (2012) and 2011 was all silver
3) RNS 510 has voice control (2012) and is a little faster than before
4) Floor mats have red ribbing (2012) 2011 were all black I think
5) Can alternate between Radio seek and preset selection on MFSW (not too sure if the 11 had it)
6) Fog light access cover panels are f**king tight compared to 2011. I know lot of people have lost theirs
7) air cleaner has hex screws instead of philliips on the 2012. 2011 had phillips.
